What Is Moissanite?

Moissanite is crystalline silicon carbide. Natural moissanite is extremely rare, so jewellery-grade moissanite sold today is laboratory-created.

Its most distinctive properties are its high refractive index, strong dispersion and high hardness. These help explain why well-cut moissanite can show intense white brilliance and noticeable rainbow flashes while also standing up well to everyday wear.

What Is Cubic Zirconia?

Cubic zirconia is synthetic cubic zirconium oxide. It has been used in jewellery for decades because it can be produced colourless, transparent and highly polished at relatively low cost.

CZ can look extremely bright when new, particularly in good cuts. It is not “plastic” and it is not inherently poor quality. It is a real crystalline material — simply a different one from moissanite.

Which Sparkles More: Moissanite or CZ?

Moissanite usually produces stronger brilliance and fire because it has a higher refractive index and substantially higher dispersion.

That means moissanite tends to return more light and split white light into more visible rainbow flashes.

CZ still sparkles strongly, but its optical profile is different. It often appears bright and white rather than showing the same level of fiery rainbow dispersion.

Does Moissanite Look More “Rainbow” Than CZ?

Usually, yes. High dispersion is one of moissanite's defining visual features. Under point-source lighting such as spotlights or sunlight, flashes of spectral colour can be very noticeable.

Some shoppers love that extra fire; others prefer a calmer, whiter look. Neither preference is wrong — it is a style choice.

Which Is Harder: Moissanite or Cubic Zirconia?

Moissanite is harder.

On the Mohs scale, moissanite is about 9.25, while CZ is generally around 8–8.5. The Mohs scale is not linear, so these numbers should not be treated as simple percentages. What matters practically is that moissanite is more resistant to scratching and abrasion in everyday jewellery use.

Does CZ Get Cloudy?

CZ does not simply absorb “cloudiness.” However, because it is softer than moissanite, its surface can accumulate fine scratches and abrasion more easily over long periods of wear. Those microscopic marks scatter light and can make the stone look less crisp or less brilliant.

On top of that, CZ can collect the same lotions, soap, oils and hard-water residue that affect any gemstone.

That means a dull CZ may improve after cleaning, but a heavily abraded surface cannot be restored with soap alone.

Does Moissanite Get Cloudy?

Clear moissanite normally does not become permanently cloudy simply because it ages. When it looks dull, surface buildup is the more common cause.

Which Is Better for Everyday Wear?

For a ring or other piece that will be worn every day for years, moissanite generally has the advantage because its higher hardness helps it retain a crisp polished surface longer.

CZ still has good wearability, but it is more likely to show scratches and edge abrasion over time — especially in exposed ring settings where the stone repeatedly contacts hard surfaces.

Why CZ Often Works Better in Earrings Than Rings

Earrings generally receive less impact and abrasion than rings. A CZ stud may spend most of its life away from desks, door handles, gym equipment and other hard surfaces.

That makes CZ a very sensible choice for earrings, charms and decorative accent stones even if you would prefer moissanite for a heavily worn centre-stone ring.

Moissanite vs CZ for Engagement Rings

If the ring is intended for daily wear, moissanite offers a stronger combination of scratch resistance and long-term optical performance.

CZ can still create a beautiful engagement-style look at a lower initial price, but a heavily worn CZ centre stone may need replacement sooner if surface wear becomes visible.

When comparing complete rings, remember that stone durability is only one part of the picture. The metal, prongs, plating and setting quality matter too.

Which Is More Expensive?

Moissanite normally costs more than cubic zirconia because producing high-quality gem moissanite is more technically demanding and the material has stronger long-term performance.

CZ is mass-produced very efficiently and is therefore widely available at low cost.

Do not judge value by the stone alone. A CZ set in genuine 925 sterling silver can still be a well-made piece, while a moissanite stone in a poor setting can still create durability problems.

Does a Higher Price Mean Moissanite Is Always the Better Buy?

No. It depends on the use.

• If you want a daily centre-stone ring you expect to keep for years, paying more for moissanite can make sense.

Which Looks More Like Diamond?

Both are diamond simulants in the sense that they can be cut to create a colourless brilliant look, but neither is diamond.

Moissanite has more fire than diamond and is doubly refractive, so trained observers may notice rainbow flashes or facet doubling. CZ is singly refractive and often has a softer, more glassy look at larger sizes.

The better question is not “which fools people best?” but which optical look and durability level you prefer.

Weight: Same Size Does Not Mean Same Carat

CZ is much denser than moissanite. That means two stones with the same face-up millimetre diameter can have very different actual weights.

Can You Tell Moissanite and CZ Apart at Home?

Visual clues can suggest a difference but are not reliable enough for authentication.

Which One Is Better for Sensitive Skin?

The gemstone itself is usually not the main skin-contact issue. The metal touching the skin matters much more.
